After competing in the provincial club championship game for the past four years, the OIRC Premiere Women were finally victorious on Saturday. It wouldn't have seemed possible after losing 12 of last years starting line-up, but with an extremely young and dedicated team, the ladies pulled past the Irish Canadians two weeks ago in an extremely physical game, which proved to be good preparation for the final match-up versus a familiar Toronto Scottish team. Justine Brassard scored first and Hutchy converted to see the Irish lasses up 7-0 early in the match. The more-experienced Toronto Scottish would take the lead before the half scoring twice, but missing both conversions. The Irish maintained composure despite a lop-sided penalty count as Krista Goulding was send to the bin, but conceded 3 points beinging the score to 13-7. Hutchy slotted a penalty kick from right in front of the posts to bring the score within 3 with 17 minutes remaining. The visitors applied heavy pressure in the dying minutes as the Scottish attempted to clear their lines forcing a tunrover and drawing another penatly which was taken quick by scrum-half and veteran Jen Boyd, slipping out of two tackles before diving in for the winning try. Final score Irish 15 - Scottish 13. This result was accomplished with TJ in our hearts, and an enormous thank-you goes out to all the youngsters who bought in to the game plan, the team, and the club as a whole. We look forward to starting next season the way we finished this one!! Best of luck to the girls who are off to university. Julianne Purcell and Meghan Pritchard will be joined by Jill Maclaren at St. Francis Xavier, where they will look to defend their CIAU Title. Taylar Reid, Sophie Moher and Erica Weinstein will certainly strengthen McGills line-up, while Alex Cestnik heads to Western. Lana Dingwall and Sarah Tranquil-Doherty will play for Ottawa U and Sasha Lauks is returning to U of Guelph. Good Luck Girls - we'll be watching! |
