19th Annual St Patrick’s Day Races

In the 19 years since the beginning of this annual event there has been much evolution. From its beginnings as an 8K run with 90 participants (some opting to cover the stretch by bike) to today’s race which attracted 860 registrants timed by electronic devices.

This year’s St. Patrick’s Day event – despite un-co-operative weather, raised the bar for numbers and took a slightly new spin. A link with Kidsport – an organization which seeks to provide opportunities for under privileged children to participate in sport -seems only fitting in the year the club will initiate it’s minor rugby program. The OIRC was able to provide support to this meaningful community organization, and hopes to promote the sport of rugby as a community-based option for Ottawa’s youth.

A huge thank-you goes out to the hard-working committee who made this year’s event such a great success. Danielle Pierce, with the wealth of experience of Dr. Patrick Murphy, and communication savvy of Old Girl Shannon Cassidy earned this year’s run a spot on the CTV news. Also, many thanks to the volunteers, without whom the event would not be possible.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED

This run is the most important event held by the club. It helps fund long-term investments and some short-term operations of the Club. Without this race, we would have a hard time operating. This should be considered a must-attend and help out event. Details have yet to be finalized but club members are usually asked to be there by 7:30am and finished by 11am.
