Congratulations U16 Ottawa Irish Under 16's faced off against the cross-town rivals Barrhaven Scottish last night. The game started about an hour after the original kickoff time. The Ottawa Irish with a few players from the Ottawa Indians U16 and Outaouais U16 huddled together prior to kickoff to listen to some inspirational words from Captain Doug Crowe (Rockland District). As soon as the game started the Ottawa Irish demonstrated their dominance over their opponents. Strong scrummaging from tight head prop Jamie Lafrance (Lester B. Person) and loose head prop Russ Beauprie (Colonel By) helped solidify the front row and helped Hooker Mackee Leduc (Gloucester) steal a majority of Barrhavens ball. Frustration was brewing in the Barrhaven pack and after a few silly mistake the Ottawa Irish were able to capitalize with ball in hand and spinning the ball wide resulting in a try by Centre Greg Power (Colonel By) underneath the posts. The Ottawa Irish slipped up right before second half and allowed Barrhaven to score try in the far corner. Coach Mark Patterson regrouped his players and emphasized commitment to tackle. The second half began and the Ottawa Irish were looking to put this game away. Strong forward play helped move the ball forward and exceptional rucking provided clean ball to scrumhalf Ben Guibord (Rockland District) to his Captain Doug Crowe (Rockland District). As the weather deteriorated, the Irish began to kick the ball more, causing the Barrhaven back 3 to knock the ball on several time. The Irish continued to spin the ball wide to capitalize on the mismatch the Irish had in the back line. Fullback John Pierce (St. Pius) had several hard runs through the mid field defence. The forwards continued to rumble down the park until an unforeseen knock-on. The Barrhaven flyhalf quickly punted the ball down the field to relieve the pressure he was receiving from the Irish backrow and Irish flyhalf all game. The Irish regained the ball and slowly progressed back up the field, at the 50m mark Flyhalf Doug Crowe ran a clever little play resulting in Centre Greg Power kicking the ball straight down the middle of the field to an out of position fullback. Powers was then able to chase the kick and out run the entire Barrhaven Scottish field including their full back who had some words to say about Greg afterwards. "That kid is way to fast for me". Greg was then able to kick the ball into the endzone and touch it down for his second try of the game. Fly half Doug Crowe Converted the conversion. The final score 12-5. U18 Lose a close game against the Barrhaven Scottish Last night the Ottawa Irish Under 18's played a tough match against the Barrhaven Scottish. After the weather deteriorated during the Under 16's game the Under 18's played in a very wet conditions. The Irish started off very strong with huge defensive hits from Centre James Laird (Carine Wilson) and Flyhalf Jared Healey (Sir Will), putting the Barrhaven Scottish under pressure. Around the 20th minute the Barrhaven Scottish were able to penetrate the Ottawa Irish defence and score the 1st try in the far corner. The Irish retaliated with strong forward runs from Tight head Joel Charron (Garneau) and 2nd Row Jamie Lafrance (Lester B. Person). The Irish kept the ball in the forward and slowly smashed their way up the field until scrum half Scottie "I look like I'm 10" Smith (Gloucester) pulled a sneaky blind side move and touched the ball down in the end zone. Game was tied 5-5 As the second half began the backs began to take charge of the game. Captain Jared Healey (Sir Will) distributed the ball to his centre James Laird (Carine Wilson) and Greg Power (Colonel By) to punch up the middle of the field. Half way through the second half the Barhaven Scottish Fullback was able to beat the outside winger for the Scottish 2nd try of the day. Conversion was made. Score was 12-5. The Irish knew they needed a try and a conversion to tie the game. The Irish continued to try to beat the Barrhaven Scottish on the outside with quick ball to Mark Girault who was able to make some yards with his speed. Unfortunatley for some creative referring, the Irish were penalized several times. The Irish tried to fight their way back into the game but as the game began to wrap up the Irish were not able to. The final score 12-5 for Barrhaven Scottish. Irish Scorers Try: Scott Smith (Gloucester) 1 |
